- Required torque. Door weight (lb) × door height (ft) × 1.6π (about 5.0265), divided by the available spring turns. The result is in inch-pounds per turn (IPPT) and rounded to the nearest 0.1.
- Per-spring share. The assembly always uses two springs, so each spring must carry half of the rounded required torque.
- Wire selection. The smallest wire whose rated IPPT covers that half is chosen from this catalog: .234 in rated 201 IPPT and 17,000 cycles; .273 in rated 342 IPPT and 27,000 cycles; .281 in rated 372 IPPT and 30,000 cycles.
- Assembly torque. Two times the chosen wire's rated IPPT.
- Over capacity. When half the required torque exceeds 372 IPPT, no two-spring residential assembly is scheduled.
- Inputs. Weight, height, and turns must each be greater than zero. Inside diameter, spring length, and winding direction are not computed here and must be matched to the supplier's spring chart.
